Hi all
I have recently obtained some land (5 acres) in which i want to breed pedigree Gloucester Old Spots. I am looking for a supplier in Mid Wales who would sell me a sow and possibly some weaners to get the who concept started. As most who read this are probably living in England, if you could answer some of these questions i would be very grateful:
How much will it roughly cost to buy weaners and a sow?
Have you any tips on the best way to get started?
What is the pig to land ratio?First of all get a good book, Traditional Pig Keeping by Carol Harris, best £20 you’ll ever spend it will answer nearly all your questions.
Secondly i would start by fattening a couple of weaners and see how you go, first of all it helps you decide if you really really want ot keep pigs and that the ups & downs of pig keeping life are for you, once you get going this way you’ll soon know, pig keeping & breeding is very addictive if you decide its for you. Once thing to remeber that gorgeous 8 week old gilt will grow into a 49 stone monster who will rule your life for the rest of eternity til death do you part!!!!!![:D]Hi
We are not to far from Ross on Wye. If you wanted to come and look round you would be welcome. This a good time to see what you would be getting into!
The price of Sows vary depending on whether they have had alitter or not but you would be looking at anything from £200 upwards. Weaners again vary in price depending on age but most breeders would want £35 to £50 from 8 weeks on. That would be for fattening.
If you don’t want your land ploughing up you would need to have rings in the pigs.Anonymous[Thanks for that advice, do you actually sell them? IF not where would be the nearest place in Mid Wales?]Originally posted by sharon

Yes i am interested. Will these weaners have been registered?
AnonymousAnd wormed etc..
Hi Rhys
The price I am quoting is for fattening, if you are planning to use them for breeding then they will be £75 then they will be registered and good enough to breed from. The in pig gilt isaid about the man would like £250 for.
The weaners are all wormed and vaccinated for eri and e coli.AnonymousHi Sharon
Sorry to sound dull again, what is the difference in price for fattening and breeding?
Thanks
Rhys
AnonymousHas the gentleman got a picture of the in pig gilt?
Hi Rhys
The price difference is because if you want a gilt for breeding she will be better quality than a fattening gilt. She will also come registered which means she has papers without which you cannot breed and sell on PEDIGREE pigs. You would only be able to sell pigs for fat or without papers.
You will probably get cheaper i expect but I will only sell good quality pigs if they are for breeding.
Again I don’t think the gentleman in question has a computer sorry.AnonymousHi Rhys, I have a smallholding in mid Wales also and kept pigs. It might be worth you popping down to the annual winter fair in Builth Wells. I’m sure there are pig breeders there, however If I remember most of them are of the Welsh breed. Best of luck with starting your concept though.
