Whittingham Herd

This photo dates back to 1921 and shows the Whittingham herd belonging to James Allsup at the County Asylum near Preston in Lancashire.

It is one of the first pedigree herds of GOS in North West England.

It used to be common practice for asylums to maintain their herds of pigs many of which would be fed on swill produced from the leftovers from the patients’ meals.
